Understanding the Power of God's Anger - Friday, July 04, 2008
Who understands the power of Your anger, And Your fury, according to the fear that is due You? Psalm 90:11
In our modern world, we don't like the picture of an angry God. Jonathan Edwards preached one of the most famous sermons of all time, "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God." God used this message to reach thousands of people for Christ. It is important to understand God's anger.Moses asks a question in Psalm 90: "Who understands the power of Your anger?" Through this question, He affirms that few people really understand it. I believe that it can only be understood in the cross of Christ. God abominates (hates) sin and wrong. But He patiently and with infinite restraint keeps His anger and rage in check through the cross. At the cross the full measure of God's anger was poured out. Therefore, God is patient with me because Jesus bore this wrath. In the future, before Jesus comes back to the world, the human community will experience the Lord's anger. During the Day of the Lord, God will pour out His wrath and indignation on the unbelieving world. Also, on the final judgment day, individuals will understand and experience His anger as they are cast out of His presence for rejecting His Son. They will either have trusted Jesus to experience the anger of God on their behalf or they will experience it themselves first hand in a Godless eternity. We really can't appreciate our salvation deeply unless we understand the power of His anger. The next time you take communion, remember His anger and thank Him for bearing it for you. Who understands the power of His anger? I hope you can!
